According to the dictionary, the definition of “nerd” is an unflattering one. Dictionary.com says it’s “An intelligent but single-minded person obsessed with a non-social hobby or pursuit.” That couldn’t be further from the truth.
The second annual Pensacon is upon us and greater downtown Pensacola is about to be inundated by thousands of nerds from all walks of life. One thing is for certain… the audience Pensacon attracts absolutely does not fit the above-mentioned definition, nerds though they be. Non-social? Single-minded? Complete rubbish.
I am one of those nerds and I enjoyed every minute of the Con. From the invited guests to the exuberant attendees you couldn’t get more social, especially over many pints of our local Pensacola Bay Brewery’s official beer of Pensacon, Poseidon IPA. As far as being “single-minded,” no one person attending the Con kept one recurring theme throughout the weekend when it came to their cosplay, equally representing all genres. Well, all except for the 501st Legion. They are obligated to appear in their fantastically-detailed Star Wars gear.
From lively Q&A panels to workshops to the stories shared at the guests’ tables… sounds pretty social to me! Film festivals, dance parties, costume contests and, of course, the after-parties all provide plenty to round out an already-busy weekend. Hopjacks, for example, is hosting a comic-themed Heroes Vs Villains party. I’ve worked with our bartender Gina Aman to come up with some nifty specialty cocktails in addition to decorating the place like a comic book come alive courtesy of Creative Instincts.
Last year I discovered that there are also a lot of beer nerds who attend Pensacon. Many a minute was spent with these kindred spirits over a glass of suds, dissecting all we enjoy from these breweries and beer styles. I was even fortunate enough to show author and comic writer Mike Baron the local brewery. In this regard, Pensacon fulfilled its vision of “bringing people together.” Without the event, these meetings and new friendships would never have happened. It just so happened that a lot of my memories were via bar camaraderie.
What do the celebrities like to drink? Dean Haglund from The X Files preferred the Sawgrass Wheat from Pensacola Bay, Billie Dee Williams likes a nice scotch and a quiet corner, Deep Roy… well let’s just say that little guy can party!
That was then, this is now. Here’s a beer that both beer geeks and steady-state nerds alike can enjoy. I cellared some bottles of the last Brewery Ommegang Game of Thrones beer, Valar Morghulis. Belgian-style beer has so many fine details that it’s no wonder practically every beer nerd puts it on a pedestal. This Dubbel Ale is a fiery, coppery red with an ample tan head that’s continuously-fed via the bottle conditioning’s bonus CO2 production. Scents are spot-on for the style; brown sugar, wet grain and dried cherry/raisin/prune. A little allspice leads into rich, malty flavors of caramel, black cherry, plum and fig. Medium-bodied, Valar finishes very crisp and lingering.
Nerds of all stripes unite! Come party with us this weekend to show them what being a nerd really means and I’ll share a beer with you.
